Get in the Game or Go Home
I have good news and bad news. The good news is that many of your competitors will be out of business next year. The bad news is that it might be you that is out of business. You need to get into the game and promote your business. I'm sure the next question on your mind is How? Well, the how's arent' always as visible as we might like, but the reality is that we have grown our businessesse from A to B. Take a look in your rear view mirror and see where you have come from, it might be just the place to start. However, you have an obligation to your business, to take what you have learned and turn it into something valuable for your customer, employees and community. I'm sure the next question is: How am I suppose to pay for it? Well, you are the only one that can answer that. I do know that you have been watching your expenses steadily climb to new highs, so the inevitalbe is _____________ (you fill in the blank). I'm sure anxiety keeps you from pulling the trigger, but keep in mind, the health of your organization relies on you to make relevant decisions for today and tomorrow. Don't let fear drive your decision making. If your customers are loyal they will be there tomorrow, and furthermore, they are not concerned about the lowest price either. Read any business magazine and the data is clear. LOVE YOUR BUSINESS!!!

I would restate the good and bad news. I agree that the good news would be that there is less competition in the future, but the bad news may be that 'you' are the one left in business. There is no doubt that our industry is succumbing to the pressure -and on this current path, to stay in business would mean to work for wages. Sadly, the ongoing apathy in our industry and a belief that nothing can be done, will definitely destroy it. It's hard to believe that shops won't do things as simple as completing a rate survey - and then complain because things don't change.

Apathy, we seem to use this word because it sounds more business-like than ignorant. The reality is that we are, as an industry, ignorant. Can someone please tell me how completing a rate survey can damage your business? If someone thinks for a minute that information will destroy there business they need to look around. Did anyone forget that we are in the "Information Age?" Lets get real, provide the data and change will happen. When a tech brings you a piece of information about a repair you don't ignore it do you? So don't ignore your business needs, people are counting on YOU.

If you choose to be a victim this is a perfect response. Here is a quote from Stephen Covey. "An awareness of our freedom and power to choose is affirming because it can excite our sense of possibility and potential. It can also threaten, even terrify, because suddenly we're responsible, this is, "response-able." We become accountable. If we've taken shelter over the years in explaining our situation and problems in the name of the past or present circumstances, it is truly terrifying to think otherwise.Suddenly, there is no excuse.
